Why I use Great Lakes Wellness Collagen Peptides
I get it… The overload of information on safe food and supplements is overwhelming. While I DON’T promote many products, THIS product has stood the test of time for me and my family. AND just saying… the science just keeps getting stronger and stronger supporting what we experience using collagen peptides. For background…
- Back in 2010, I was looking for anything that helped battle my newly diagnosed autoimmune disease leveraging gut microbiome health and nutrient absorption. BTW… That’s something anyone battling any illness, or looking to prevent illness, should be doing too.
- I landed on this product, Great Lakes Collagen Peptides, mainly for digestion support. But it also benefits joints, skin, hair, and nails.
- Using the UNFLAVORED Great Lakes Wellness Collagen Peptides daily, along with lifestyle and diet changes I talk about so often, induced remission of my autoimmune since 2010. And by that I mean gold standard pathological proof that there are NO signs of disease in my gut despite what all prior testing found.
- I can also vouche for the joint benefits! Recent x-rays of my knees found they look fabulous with NO sign of disease despite a family history of parents and siblings having many joint replacements.
- Here’s details I find most important from their website:
Why Great Lakes Wellness?
Their products are crafted with clean, functional ingredients and undergo rigorous testing. They prioritize quality and safety in every serving. Every batch is tested by an independent certified third-party lab to ensure purity, potency, and safety. Theyโre FDA registered and operate in compliance with cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) to uphold the highest standards of quality and consistency. They’re iGen Non-GMO tested.
They know what they’re doing having nearly 100 years of expertise in this arena. Since 1922, they’ve been perfecting gelatin products, and in 2009, they pioneered the first cold-water-soluble collagen hydrolysate, also known as collagen peptides. If you prefer marine based collagen products, they have those too!
Great Lakes Wellness Collagen Peptides are:
- Bovine Collagen Peptides made from grass-fed cattle raised on rural properties under strict veterinary supervision. They are committed to animal welfare and follow evolving best practices for food safety and ethical sourcing. They cannot guarantee that the cattle are grass-finished. While the cattle are pasture raised, there are animal welfare considerations that do not make this practical in all situations. The FDA no longer regulates nor certifies “grass-fed,” but they adhere to grass-fed and animal welfare guidelines.
- Kosher
- KETO-Certified
- Paleo-Friendly
- iGen Non-GMO Tested
- Glyphosate Free
- No Preservatives
What are Collagen Hydrolysate, Collagen Peptides, and Hydrolyzed Collagen?
Collagen Hydrolysate, Collagen Peptides, and Hydrolyzed Collagen are different names for the same thing. They all refer to collagen thatโs been broken down into smaller di- and tri- peptides for easier digestion and absorption and is ideal for mixing into coffee, smoothies, or juiceโno clumping, no gelling.

Studies on Collagen Peptides
- For more technical information with study citations for collagen peptides, read my post, BONE BROTH Recipe AND Collagen HYDROLYSATE SCIENCE. In here learn that cutting edge lead researchers are exploring the concept that joint protective nutraceuticals like collagen may exert their beneficial influence via shifts in the gut microbiome with mitigation of disease, their focus being osteoarthritis! [Favazzo et al 2020] But many other sections of the post document studies for skin, body composition and muscle strength, bone health, etc.
- As a follow up to my post citations, I briefly looked at studies citing [Jendricke et al 2019] and found many! [Sun et al 2025] is a meta-analysis examining how collagen peptide intake affected muscular performance, bone turnover metrics, probability of fracture, and bone mineral density (BMD). It’s conclusion: Collagen peptide supplementation, particularly when synergized with calcium and vitamin D, is associated with continuous improvements in BMD, bone turnover markers, and muscle function. All these variables are important for fracture prevention. Owing to the information collagen peptides could be used as an adjunct therapy for managing osteoporosis.
- For studies citing [Favazzo et al 2020], there’s many too! Interestingly, a human clinical trial looked at the impact of collagen peptides supplementation for digestive symptoms [Abrahams et al 2022]. The trial found favorable findings, namely: Consumer awareness of collagen peptides for digestive health is low (31.4%). And for 14 healthy women who completed the trial, 93% (13/14) experienced a reduction in digestive symptoms, which included bloating in the absence of any other dietary or lifestyle interventions. Participant inclusion was 35 to 65 years experiencing 3 out of the following 5 symptoms: bloating, flatulence, acid reflux, stomach pain, and irregular bowel movements. The intervention was daily supplementation of 20 g dietary collagen peptide (Peptan, Rousselot) for 8 weeks.
